It seems that every year a trail spot survives, it is a gift to the riders that pour their lives into that patch of forest. Behind shopping malls or neighborhoods, young people get together and form fantastic creations of dirt. Using intuition, team work, and elbow grease, they turn what was a forgotten plot of earth into a place of fun and magnificent physical performance. “Trails” offer fun without rules passed down by a coach or teacher; fun without a manual to read.
Every year, months of preparation are spent for a brief period of summer, when the fruits of this intense labor can be enjoyed. Months in the snow, stacking up frozen clumps. Months in the mud, giving some semblance of shape to those thawed clumps. Months in the warm glow of the forest, shaping these forms into precise vehicles of flight. These people work hard outside of the woods so that they can come into the woods and pour their lives into these jumps.
What an outsider may see as juvenile activity creates a community of people that learn to work together and learn to work for themselves. Fifteen-year-olds and Thirty-year-olds stand side by side and create what becomes a healthy community.
Behind a neighborhood in Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, lies such a place known to the locals as PTT, or more recently, Lovewood. The trails are threatened. They are worse than threatened. They are slotted for the chop block. Old Papa Bull Dozer is going to come marching down the line and push over a decade of hard work. (Think of Fern Gulley PEOPLE!) These trails are the Keystone to an entire community of bike riders, and if it is destroyed, the lives of several people will be greatly punctured by the thorn of loss. A unique and exciting possibility exists. The possibility of buying this land and preserving the trails has come to light. I can't remember, but I'm glad I took a picture, because that's funny. What's also funny is Wert chest planting a wet bar room floor while he dances to the Beastie Boys. Unfortunately, I only got this table top to show you. "Nut up and Fuck it" was the motto of the night. No one is quite sure what it means, but Wert sure likes it.

The winter monotony is coming on strong. Wednesdays mean B Cubed and Quarter Beers. It's a snow-driven regiment I tell you! And since all we have to look forward to on the ten day forecast is ice and snow, I wouldn't expect a big change anytime soon. Riding? Why not. Check the Wolf.

Hibernation Frustration

It's hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when your ten day forecast doesn't show a high temperature above freezing. We are over the hump of February, and things show no sign of warming up. At least under these extra terrestrial looking lumps lie the tools of amazing fun that await us all in just a few months.

And it's Wert saying that a newscaster is at the Cross Roads on 18th Street, and that we should hit him with snowballs when he goes on the air. 'Clever plan,' thinks me, so we assume some extremely suspicious hiding spots and lurk around, as though we could be standing in the middle of a freezing road in a foot of filthy slush with anything but mischief on the brain.

Believe it or not, these fellas caught on and went to regroup in their van. Of course a police van just happens to show up. Wert managed to send a snowball into the van on a run-by sneak attack, but our glory had been quelled, or had it?

Oh that's right,

we were on our way to Quarter Beer Karaoke. Oh sweet vindication! And of course, when you mix alcohol and Wert together you are bound to come up with some sort of tussle. Tomorrow's Friday? Jesus, what's next?

Snowed in Bender Part Two: Has Anyone Seen My Truck?

So Ryan's car was stranded at Nick's house on
Leticoe Street, which can be a treacherous road without a few feet of snow on it. However, our unrelenting determination (chuckle) set the rescue in motion. A fallen tree and a healthy dose snow and ice made the excavation quite an ordeal. We thought that our troubles were over when a formidable looking bulldozer came chugging down the hill. Unfortunately, the industrial beast was beaten by the snow and steep of Leticoe, and thus we let it go. "Leticoe", "Let it go," No? I'm reaching.

Seriously though, that thing was going over if that telephone pole hadn't stopped its sliding descent. I was amazed at how worthless those burly tires were. Yins need some chains on er. Needless to say, Ryan's car is still stuck there. So much for the Subaru. Should've gotten a Jeep.

If you're in the Northeast corner of the country, this is no news to you,

but for you lucky ducks sitting fat and happy in a long sleeve shirt talking about how cold it is, well, you know where to stick it.

Mark is one of those people. Unfortunately, his car isn't so lucky. I was stranded in the South Side for the weekend, but due to a frozen battery I only got one shot off before she kicked.
If only I could have captured the fifty person snow ball fight (involving several angry motorists, one of which spun his car around and tried to run us down, seriously), the fifteen foot tall snow man by the Shop, the 4 wheelers towing snow boarders and skiers, the giddy look on everyone's face as they remembered what it was like to be excited by the surprise of nature, the people ice skating down 18th street. Hmmf, alright that's enough. Photos do it so much better. Well, rumor has it that we are supposed to get another blast tomorrow. Maybe I'll be more prepared for it this time. The Minnetonkas aren't the ideal snow boot.

Yesterday started like most days have started during the past month. We looked outside and said, "why bother," but then Fisher showed up as Mark ate his habitual "Mark's Famous," short for "Mark's Famous Hot Dog," and we had such a good laugh about our friend's absurd misfortune (I won't go into details of the origin of that shiner) that we decided to load up the Camry and head west, way west; all yonder ways to Cleveland (Go Steelers) and ride Ray's, where man and beast truly get along. Shit, why not? By the way. We fit three bikes and three people without a bike rack and with the trunk closed in the old toyOter.
Thanks to Bobby, as always, for Yuengling Gratitude, Raditude? Wait a minute, you're right! That was a Keystone Painted on the wall of the best skatepark in Cleveland. Enough.

Well, the Heathens jam was awesome. A bunch of dudes dressed up in the woods. What's not to love.
Potoczny is still out in Eastern Pa ripping around some proper berms. Popple and Jackson and Mark got third place in the Jam contest thing. The judges seemed to be won over by the triple threat passingness.

I'm down here in Savannah with those fellas from FlatLand HalfWay to Florida, and we are about to head down to the Baco-A-No-No jam in Orlando.

If you're getting sick of foliage pictures you might as well check back in December, because I'm not stoppin' this train. The ground has been a bit more tuned for digging than riding, but Sergeant Zimmer is keeping the wolves at bay with propane tanks and a jet engine. Once the snow comes, I'm interested to see what Josh uses that thing for. The plan is to do some Bethlehem this week, and then go to the Lock Haven Jam this weekend. I hope old Mr. Weather is on board.

So we decided to say, "To hell with this shoddy weather business," and took matters into our own hands. Although we had no steeds or swords, we had brawn and sheer determination. We also heard there was a KISS cover band playing at a bar in the Cleveland area.

And since the woods were wet, and we live in the tri-state area, we knew there was only one place to go to get the feeling and speed of trails, and that's Ray's Mountain Bike Park. Thanks to Bobby and Ray and everyone there for creating such a bad ass place for so many people to enjoy.
After the park, we followed our fearless leader Justin Simpson to the Sly Fox to see Mr. Speed, the aforementioned cover band do their jobs, which they had proudly been doing for fifteen years. Although a slight disagreement between myself and the band cause me to be removed from the premises, I have to say Mr. Speed can rock some ass. Sorry no riding pictures. I have some footage of the whole weekend that I'll be slapping together, but now it's time to go watch the Browns get their rears shoved into their ears.

I was stuck in some hella-crap traffic yesterday, but being behind this car made me smile. Thanks GHP. Halloween is creeping up, and the temperatures are seriously starting to become an issue. The phrase, "weather permitting" is being dropped a bit too frequently, but we got the chance to ride Imperial concrete park the other night. Mark's keeping his lip trick tech shit grooving, despite the fact that in the lower 40's, the park seemed more like some frozen lunarscape.

The annual return of that bittersweet season known has autumn is in full effect. It seems to be trail jam central. Lockhaven, on the 24th, and then Catty the following week. Of course tis be also the season of costumes, which makes everything better. So there is going to be a bunch of dirty dudes in the woods wearing costumes. Sounds like some damn drug fest. Where's the jam band?

Well, we got stuck behind this big bastard en route to Florida. Either no one was hurt or they just didn't give a damn because an ambulance didn't show up in the hour we sat behind old smokey. Minus that, the trip down went smoothly, except for joey "killing the fuck" out of something's head around Columbia, SC. We were going to stop and see what kind of life we ended, but we were afraid that if it wasn't dead we would have to put it out of its misery ourselves, and we weren't armed.

I was only in Casselberry for the night, but I wasn't let down by the now legendary status of "mess" it has accrued since Greg's worked his magic. What would a trip there be without something like this. If I had a way to cut that clip in half, I would have, but I'm still far from home, until tomorrow, so I'm lone gunning here sans editing equipment.

Also, we've temporarily run out of the Wolf Brand shirt in all sizes, so I've taken the link down until we get more. The video is still for sale for just twelve bucs.

Although we got an evening session in at the South Park ACTION PARK yesterday afternoon, the rainy weather has us changing gears into liver destruction mode; it's seasonal. A couple of "Hot N' Ready's" from the recently opened Little Ceasar's and a couple of Busch Camo-Cases ($9.99 at Corner Brew) did us right, or wrong depending on your moral disposition. Rumor has it that old Mr. Sunshine may creep back into our lives tomorrow. Makes me want to sing some Beatles.

I'd apologize for the lack of updates, but who are we kidding, this blog is a lack of updates, a dearth, if you will. I'm sorry I'm not sorry.

Alright, it's been an awesome week. I shot down to Florida to pick up Joey J. En route I crossed over the New River Gorge Bridge. Talk about getting some shit built. Top of the world, pals.

We got back to the burgh to find the city in crisis lock down mode due to the G-20 summit. We walked around in some charade of a parade that proved nothing, then went and rode Posh with Cottle, a definite improvement on the weekend.
I'm not going to get into the protesting vein, I have some footage for that, but the city was filled with 20 people who can be blamed for everything crappy that happens in the world, and then 10,000 protesters who can... be blamed for everything crappy that happens in the world. Get over it people.

Oh yeah, I was just reminded by Greg to put that jam video on.

The Welcome Weekend is fast approaching, and the forceast for Saturday and Sunday looks good. However, Friday looks like the clouds are going to take a dump on our face. To take care of wet conditions, I went out and got a blow torche from Harbor Freight. Josh and I gave it a test run and dried an entire flat bottom in a matter of minutes. Awesome day today! Garrett and Mike and Kye and Tim, from all over the place, were here again. I didn't get any pictures of them because I was slacking, but I did shoot this stuff at Sheraden. Before that, we rode at Boyce, and after we went and finished up this sweet little off-shoot at the trails.

She rides nice, there'll be some photos of people cruising that thang tomorrow. We rode it tonight but my camera said, "fuck all it's dark!"

That little dude Jake was trying to decapitate some locals at Sheraden.

Check out that young girl hiding her face! Where he failed, Yeagle almost succeeded. If only I had a photo of that, seriously. Babies were crying, Yeagle was roaring out rebel yells. I thought we were about to become a testament to the Graffitti on the ramps which read, "G.M.T.N." or "Get Money Trap Niggaz." Luckily we didn't get trapped.

If you're not 'trappin' niggaz' you better be 'fuckin' bitches.' Lord knows we're all getting lots of money, like Mr. Potoczny here.

Anyway, the cute little baby raccoon that has been a regular fixture up at the trails this past week is probably dead, so dump some (or them) out for that little feller. Zimmer took the day off tomorrow so let's go fun some riding dohgees!

In case you didn't know, the Welcome Jam is quickly evolving into the Welcome Weekend. That's right, there is a Jam being held at PTT in Bethel Park on the Friday before the jam, like the day before. So keep your calendars open folks. There is also talk of a post-jam jam at another spot on Sunday, so be ready, things are about to get out of hand fast.

Fun day at the trails. Really fucking fun. Check out Netley training with the King of the Jungle. While we were out digging and riding, some flaccid internet dick-squeeze was talking shit on the video we shot at Potoczny's in thirty minutes. We all had a good laugh about it. So did Yogi Bear. Thanks Garin! Come on down to the trails whenever you want and maybe Mark could relearn some of his combos by watching you ride, which I'm sure is a holy sight to behold.

Alright it's official. September 12th. Mark your planners, tell your friends, come thirsty. Along with the Potoczny trail jam tradition, we will be having a high air contest on the jump cordially known as "Science." This year we are adding something for those that may not like to break through the Earth's atmosphere on their bicycles, and that is the low air contest, also being held on Science. Winners win beer, which will be flowing like wine, so I'm pretty sure everyone is going to be a winner, age permitting. On top of that we will be having an "Oldest man to jump science" contest, so come and dust off the Rippers and float some jumps.
The newest installment of the Welcome To Pittsburgh mess, known as "This Is Fun" will be premiering too, so even if you lost your bike, come out to the Potoczny Fufanu Palace and have some fun.

There you are! A bunch has been going on here in the burgh. Unfortunately, the internet at our apartment has not, since there isn't any. Mark's bike is CAMO. He can still do good looking stunts.
Everyone's been friendly and messy. The rain's coming, the dirt is stacking, and the guys are nice. Mike and Lee are here from England. Look for some debauchery soon.

A couple fine fellers from the deep sahth are here in the burgh. Unfortunately, Beans kicked Brock off the couch last night. What an ass. We went and rode Monroeville yesterday. The jumps were hosed from the rain we've had this past week, but we had a big crew and they whipped right into shape. I would have snapped a photo, but I was saving my battery for Karaoke and Quarter beers. Brock and Pat certainly took advantage. Anyway, I'll do you one better. So Mark M. and I checked out a new apartment yesterday. We got so excited about it that we rented a helicopter and took an aerial photo of the place. My camera was kind of being funky, so some of the focus is a little soft, but you get the idea. Keep your fingers crossed. Mike, Wert, and I are now 10 days into our cross county trip and what was planned as a 3 week trip looks like it is going to be 5. We made stops in Chicago and Salt Lake City along the way. In Chicago we pedaled across the city, hit up and sea walls, rode Wilson Park, and rode Willow Street Trails which were a treat. In Salt Lake we got to ride Berringer's house and Tanner Park. The high light for me was bombing down 7 miles of the Mill Creek Canyon in the Wastch Mountains. Elf was nice enough to host us there, and show us how to play his hybrid skaterpark/fusball table that had a few heated games. Leaving SLC, we crossed the Bonnival Salt Flats, the dessert of Nevada, and the SIeraa Nevada Mountain Range. Now we are In San Fransisco and leaving shortly to stay with our friend Allen Jackson in Santa Cruz and ride his trails fittingly called Sasquatch Canyons. More soon, Mark P

Been a while, but heres a well needed post of the events of everyone's favorite holiday, the superbowl of drinking season, st patty's day. started off the day with a nice shitty everclear drink. almost got kicked off the bus for swearing. pissed everywhere you can think of, except my pants which is kind of a dissapointment but it cool. protoz didn't make it all the way through the day, died around 6. in his sleep, he met his new life mate, some creepy bitch from cleveland who tried to give him handjobs after i convinced her to do so. all in all, an extremely successful day that ended up with me being drunk until 7pm tonight and spooning with the toilet for a while. that's it for now you fucking sex bastards. it's been real.

Yesterday, I was woke up at 9:30 am by one G Johnson who had already consumed 6 -7 cups of coffee and was ready to go. We managed to finish a new roller that should make what was a dud of a section last year a lot better. Moving on, Glen stacked the majority of another landing himself. Here are some pics from last month in Florida. Getting away from the cold of Pennsylvania felt good, and this trip was a doozie. It had all the ingrediates of a memorable trip. I bumped into MC Hammer at the Super Bowl. Did I mention the Steelers won which means Pittsburgh is the world champion greatest city in the world. Butts County comes in a close second. We nearly ran out of gas in Butts which would have been one of the worst tricks God could play on us. But luckily we made it out of there on made it to Florida for fun with bikes, gators, and Svens. On the way home we stoped in Charlotte and hung out with our buds from Puke Party which is always a good time. more soon-Mark P

So the weather has been up and down as of late. We had a few nice days and Mike was lucky enough to snap a few shots at Imperial on his new Nikon D-80. But the weather went back down the shitter like Big Ben at the bowling alley. Luckily Shane at SPC has been renting out the Cube every Wednesday for bike night and we got enough snow for some sled shredding. On the brighter side, Ryan Hoey and I are going to escape the Ice and head to Castlebury for a few weeks of sun shine.
